When Untamed (surely you’ve heard about Untamed Cat Food) asked us to test their cat food range. As you can guess, I was really excited. When we moved house, one of the first things we had on our minds as a family was to finally being able to keep pets! So we got a dog first. After some disappointment of adopting an older cat from Battersea, accidentally, our little cat, Tokyo made her way into our home and hearts. We have adopted Tokyo when she was a kitten and even my husband (who was supposedly a dog person!) is in love with her.
Cats have this ability to just make you adore them, in their strange little ways. So Tokyo is still young, a year and half old, a very active cat, prefers so stay indoors (luckily). Although let’s you know where are the boundaries with her, she is gracious enough to let the kids cuddle and squeeze her. With her, our family is complete.
Feeding mostly indoor cats
Cats who mostly spend time indoors (our Tokyo not an indoor only cat, but she prefers to be indoors, I don’t want to call her lazy behind her back, but…) are predisposed to a couple of increased risks like obesity, diabetes and decreased fitness. Tokyo is active some parts of the day randomly but she tends to sleep a lot, like most cats. So we got her toys and scratch poles, hiding tunnels to keep her busy. She always had the tendency of preferring the branded food pouches over the cheap stuff my husband bought for her (cat food is cat food). So for these reasons, her food needs to provide her with all the nutrition she needs.
Food is such an important element in life, the quality of the food really has multiple ways of effecting ours and our pets well being too. We noticed, that Tokyo is a better mood and seem happier and more playful when she had a piece of chicken from the table for example. That’s real food. But we can’t feed them with cooked food, it’s not good for her.
Are cats carnivores?
Yes, they can have fruit and vegetables, but cats are carnivores, their main diet should be meat based. Tokyo nibbles on some corn on the cob sometimes but obviously prefers real meat over anything. This is something as a cat owner you cannot manipulate or try to feed cats with meat free diet because you are vegan.
However, we can choose food and brands that create fewer greenhouse gas emissions. A lot less of beef and pork, rather opt for poultry and fish.
What were cats fed on back in the ancient times?
The Egyptians, the Romans and the Greeks are are known to have fed their cats a diet of fresh fish, other small animals like mice and birds, fresh meat, eggs and cheese. This diet was supplemented with grains and other staple foods. This reflected especially the Egyptians’ understanding of the importance of balanced nutrition for their feline companions. This diet was supplemented with hunting, and cats of course were even kept to catch mice and other rodents.
What food cats should be eating?
Although times have changed, but the cats’ diet and more importantly their nutrition profile haven’t. Whilst commercial pet food is very convenient, just as much as ultra processed food doesn’t do any good for humans – the same applies for our pets including cats as well.

About Untamed Cat Food
Untamed was a brand that I was keeping an eye on for a while now. I heard people talking about it plus I looked into how their cat food is made and tried to learn more about their ethical practices. As someone, who’s conscious about what environmental effect pets and cats in particular can have, this is important to me. So far, I was feeding Tokyo with branded and CANNED cat food, because of her preferences and because cans are recyclable but pouches are not.
Real meat with quality protein from Untamed
Untamed is a cat food brand with recipes that only use real meat and contain balanced protein, fat, and carbohydrates mix to mimic what the kitty would be eating in the wild. They deliver 16.5% protein with their food portions, which is far higher than some mainstream supermarket brands, which only deliver around 7% protein. This is very important for a cat at any stage of their lives. They don’t use use animal derivatives (this is a blanket term for low quality animal parts, some of them should’t even be consumed) only human-grade, nutritious whole meats. They also don’t use other hidden by-products, grains, or artificial preservatives.

Let’s move onto the other important issue for me as a cat owner. At the heart of Untamed’s operations is its strict commitment to animal welfare. They only use meat from sources with ethical farming practices. Meaning, the animals are raised in conditions that respect their natural behaviours, and they are never subjected to cruel treatment or factory farming. Furthermore, Untamed is strictly against animal testing and animal cruelty.
Untamed is a member of 1% for the Planet, so they donate at least 1% of its annual sales to environmental organisations. Untamed is also certified by Carbon Neutral Britain, meaning they achieved and maintain their carbon neutral status. The company achieved B-Corp status in 2024.
Plastic-free packaging
The Untamed cat food tins are plastic free and recyclable. The rest packaging was just the carton box and plastic free tape – so thumbs up for that.
Review: What we thought about Untamed Cat Food
Taste-test
Passed with flying results. So far we tried each of the cans. That’s 7 varieties of different meaty cat food cans. Tokyo loved them all. She is not overly fussy like I said, but you can clearly see the difference when she is enjoying her food and when she just fills her tummy. She’s also in a happier mood and spirits afterwards.
Portion control
Secondly, even though the cans appear to be small (75g cans), the content is quality, full meat with a little gravy. As opposed to the larger looking cat food pouches by mainstream brands that only contain the same amount of meat resembling mince (or whatever it’s called). The rest is jelly or aspic. So, totally worthless stuff in term of nutrition but high in calories. The contents of the 75g is perfectly adequate as a single portion for our adult cat.
Price-factor
The price for a cat eating 2 tins a day is around £2 which is very comparable to other leading brands. Not at all comparable to cheap, supermarket own brand cat food, but then again, that’s got nothing to do with edible components either. You get what you pay for and you need to compare apple to apple.

Tasty food the cat really enjoys, it’s nutritious and good for her. Loving the fact that Untamed do their best in terms of ethical production and all their sustainability efforts. I am very glad that I got to try Untamed (well, Tokyo is even happier!). I think I’m going to buy her the dry food too. (As it is suggested that cats eat both wet and dry food: dry food is important for their teeth, apparently.)
I’m even thinking using Untamed Cat Food as a gift for my feline owner friends as a gift. The packets of cans are just so cute and gifteable!
