This apple and orange crumble was born of a fruit bowl saving mission: when you just have a few too many apples and oranges to go through and it’s time for a wintery, warming, fruit crumble that is the ultimate budget-friendly comforting treat for a Sunday lunch.
What fruits can be used in a crumble?
Apart from the classic apple there can be so many other fruits that can be used and the combination of some fruits.
A delicious crumble totally depends on the type of fruit you use: the flavour and the texture of the dish. It all depends on your taste preferences and what’s in season.
Traditional choices include:
- Apples are the most popular choice with their nice balance of sweetness and tartness
- Pears are another fantastic option, offering a soft texture that complements the crunchy topping beautifully
- Berries like blackberries and raspberries are also popular for crumbles
- Plums are also a great choice for their tartness and sweet crunchiness
- Rhubarb is a firm favourite for many as well, especially when in season
- Cherries – I have a lovely Reduced Sugar Rainier Cherry Crumble recipe on the blog
- You can even mix fruits; combining apples with oranges or plums with berries can create a vibrant medley of colours and flavors
Can I use frozen fruit for crumble?
Absolutely! A mixed bag of frozen berries or summer fruit mix will make a beautiful crumble – you just have to defrost it first.
Tips when making this Wintery Apple and Orange Crumble
- you don’t have to layer the fruits like I did, you can just mix them as you wish and toss with the dark brown sugar
- you can use any muesli you’d like and also plain oats too. I used a nutty muesli with added raisins and I loved the mixture
- you can also add a little all spice, ground nutmeg or a splash of maple syrup too, to make it Christmassy
- you can use any type of sugar, even plain white granulated sugar to help the cost down

Apple and Orange Crumble
A traditional crumble recipe but spiced ip for winter and Christmas with oranges, cinnamon, ground almond and nutty muesli
Ingredients
For the filling
- 3-4 medium apples cored and sliced thinly
- 2 oranges peeled and sliced
- 15 g dark brown sugar
For the topping
- 75 g ground almonds
- 75 g nutty muesli
- 15 g dark brown sugar
- 50 g butter or vegan butter room temerature
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180CWash and core apples, slice them up thinly.Peel the oranges and slice them.Prepare the roasting dish: grease it all over with a little bit of butter or vegan butter. Arrange a layer of tightly packed sliced apples in the baking dish.

- Layer the oranges on the top of the apple slices, sprinkle with the 15g brown sugar that's been measured out for the filling.Add another layer of apple slices. Doesn't matter if it's not perfectly the same amount in the fruit lasagna as the bottom layer.

- Make the topping: in a mixing bowl, combine the nutty muesli, the ground almond, the butter and the sugar. Scoop the mixture onto the fruit lasagna and smooth it over evenly.Bake it for 40-50 minutes. I like mine quite crunchy on the top so I brown it and add a few more cubes of butter and a sprinkle of dark brown sugar half way through the baking.Serve it hot, with vanilla ice cream or greek yogurt - or of course swap these for vegan alternatives.Enjoy!
