This is a recipe you can make within 20 minutes when you are craving something freshly baked and savoury. My children often ask for it and it’s a request that’s very hard to turn down as there is no excuse not to make these upon request: so simple, so quick and with simple ingredients probably already in your fridge and pantry.
Is it easy to make cheese puffs?
Yes! It takes 10 minutes maximum to prepare the batter – it get’s even quicker if you’ve done it a few times – and then just bake them for another 10 minutes. That’s all.
What can you eat cheese puffs with?
My children eat them just as they are, when they come out of the oven warm and soft. They eat the rest later the day, normally adding some ham or chorizo on the side and sliced bell peppers. They make an excellent afternoon snack – and for you, to whip up a couple of cheese puffs, it only takes 20 minutes.
You can also eat them with:
- sides for soups
- slice them into two halves and fill them with sandwich ingredients
- use them for dips like hummus or tzatziki etc.
- part of a smorgasbord or charcuterie spread
- accompany olives and wine with them
- for breakfast with eggs and beans
Literally, there are so many ways to eat them!
Can you make cheese puffs with the children?
Absolutely! This is such a simple and easy recipe that even the children can help making it – all the way through, with very little supervision. And the reward for helping is tasty and instant!
What type of cheese can you use for cheese puffs?
I have used grated mature cheddar, but any hard cheese will do as long as it has a strong flavour. So grated gouda, manchego grana padano, emmental (I have a Hungarian cheese scones recipes with emmental – if you fancy seomthing esle) etc will work too.
What are the basic ingredients needed for cheese puffs?
They only need a handful of basic ingredients you normally have in the fridge and pantry. Nothing fancy. Let’s see them:
- milk – any milk including vegan milk will do
- flavoursome hard cheese
- egg
- flour – I used self-raising to make them even puffier, but you can use all-purpose flor too, just add more baking powder or a sachet of dry yeast

Quick and Easy Cheese Puffs
Ingredients
- 150 g self-raising flour
- 125 ml milk or oat milk
- 1 egg
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 200 g grated cheddar
- 1/4 tsp salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180 Celsius. In one mixing bowl, whisk the milk and the egg together until they are smooth. I just used skimmed milk - it's totally ok, you don't need full fat milk for this.In another mixing bowl, mix all the dry ingredient until they are well combined.

- Next step is adding the dry ingredients bowl into the wet ingredients bowl and gently combine. You should see the bicarbonate of soda and self-raising flour immediately reacting and producing foam like pockets. Grease or line a baking sheet and plop a tablespoonful of batter as portion. Repeat and space them out by a few centimetres - like I did on the photo.

- Bake them for 10 minutes, they will start to puff up immediately in the oven and cook very quickly, so you just want to reach a light golden colour - and then they are done.Eat them warm or cold next day (just cover them so they don't go stodgy).
