Ethical living involves many things that make individuals more conscious about their choices. Because of the complexity of this, it can be difficult to understand just what living ethically means and how you can be more ethical (and often more sustainable at the same time), making better choices to help others as well as the planet. Read on to learn a bit more what really ethical living is all about and how you can make more ethical choices in your life.
What does ethical living really mean?
Living ethically is making choices that are morally right, sustainable, and socially responsible. To be more ethical, you should strive to be mindful of the impact your actions make on the environment, society, and the well-being of others – not just yours. It encourages you to think about the ethical implications of what you consume, your lifestyle, as a whole and your interactions with the world.
Ethical living is all about your values aligning with your actions and trying to minimize any harm while maximizing your positive impact.
So, how do you go about it?
There are different values that are involved in ethical living that you can to try and incorporate if you want to be live more ethically. These are all areas in life, think about everything you do. When you begin to live more ethically, you could start by focusing on one area at a time to ensure you don’t get overwhelmed. Otherwise it does become overwhelming. Then, you can start branching out to other areas. The main thing in my view is, that don’t expect yourself to perfect it, ever. It’s not about perfection. Imperfect is very good and it’s all about intentions. It’s a long-term game.
Learn to be more sustainable
Sustainability is a crucial part of living ethically and is a great place to start your ethical living. Being sustainable is meeting your own needs without harming the planet, and, in turn, not harming future generations. It involves being environmentally aware, preserving natural ecosystems, and using resources responsibly. Just to mention a few. But how can you be more sustainable? Here are a few ways you can be sustainable that you can start to implement in your everyday life.
- Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle– Make an effort to use less and find new uses for old things. Try recycling more too, such as paper, glass, and plastic. But to start with, focus on reduce.
- Use water wisely– Think about how much water you use every day. Change your water consumption by not letting the water run while brushing your teeth and not having long showers.
- Try to save energy– Instead of leaving every light on in the house, turn them off as you exit the room, unplug electronics when you’re not using them, and switch to more energy-saving appliances.
- Pick eco-friendly products– Try finding eco-friendly products such as products that are made from recycled materials. Equally, you can choose long-lasting products too.
- Plant more– Having more plants may be a small way to contribute positively to the environment, but it makes a huge difference. Plants can improve the environment as they provide food for insects and help to clean the air.
Support Fairtrade
When buying something, a way to be more ethical is by choosing Fairtrade certified products. Fairtrade allows producers of products, particularly from developing countries, to receive fair compensation for their work. It also makes sure that every worker is in a safe, fair, and comfortable work environment. When you purchase Fairtrade products, you can help support workers and farmers in these countries. They can then support their families and the environment.
Be a mindful consumer
Being more mindful of your consumption means that you should be aware of the origins and impacts of the products you choose to purchase. You also need to consider how much you consume and try to lower it to help the environment and positively impact others. When purchasing products, think about what you need to consume and not what you want. Being more thoughtful with your consumption will help you to lower it and choose ethical products too.
A great rule to live by is to choose quality over quantity. Purchase items that will last longer rather than something that lasts temporarily. You can strive to choose local brands too, as well as ethical brands, to further enhance your ethical decisions.
Another thing we need to mention here is to buy as little new items as you can. Try to buy more second hand and pre-loved. This way, you can save an item going to landfill and support circular economy as well as not using precious resources to manufacture something from scratch (this involves – amongst others -water, air and CO2 footprint).
Be more socially responsible
Being socially responsible is all about impacting society in a positive way. To achieve this, you should think about how your actions affect society as a whole and how you can change them to benefit society as a whole. Or at the very least, not causing harm. It can include actions like advocating for social justice, human rights, and equitable treatment for everyone everywhere.
To start being more socially responsible you can give to charity regularly through donations. Many cultures and religions have a mandatory obligation to give to charity and help those in need, such as donating through Zakat. You can also choose to volunteer at charities to aid them as often as possible.
You can get involved in community service, advocate for policies that promote social equity, and support socially responsible businesses too.
Being transparent and accountable
Another way to be more ethical is by being transparent and accountable. Be more open about your values and practices and make sure to take responsibility for your actions.
This can also involve how you shop and what businesses you support. Choose businesses that are transparent about how they source materials and how they manufacture their products. You can also hold them accountable for their ethical practices and select companies that change and grow in this area. Use your money as a voting power, for a better future.
Looking out for animals
Living ethically even includes the welfare of animals and thinking about how they are treated. Strive to make sure that all animals are treated humanely and with respect when sourcing products. This also includes looking out for animals and advocating against mistreatment, protecting all animals from harm.
When shopping, think about whether products use testing on animals and source cruelty-free brands. This can help to put a stop to animal testing for various products, especially cosmetics, that harm them. Consider plant-based foods or try to find responsibly sourced animal products to reduce the hurt and suffering of animals.
Why are all this important?
So, why is ethical living important? Well, there are several reasons why living more ethically is crucial. Being more ethical can aid the environment and make a difference to our planet. Over the years, there have been huge environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, and lack of resources. Living more ethically can help combat these environmental issues by promoting sustainable practices.
Living more ethically can also aid your well-being and personal fulfillment. This is because being ethical aligns your actions with your values which leads to a meaningful life. As well as benefitting yourself, you can benefit society through social justice. Ethical living supports fair treatment and equal opportunities for everyone. This means that you can contribute to a more humane society, ensuring everyone everywhere is fairly treated and receives the support they need.
Try these methods so you can start to live more ethically, helping the planet, society, and animals, while benefiting your lifestyle. Ethical living can aid individuals to be more mindful of the impact of their actions and make more morally right choices.
