Review: Simba Hybrid Mattress Topper

Earlier this year, I reviewed the Refurbished Simba Hybrid Mattress, which I was really impressed with. I didn’t even know, refurbished mattress was a thing! I am still loving it, it’s hands down the best mattress I ever had worth every penny – especially, that it’s practically half the price of a new one.  This time, Simba was kind enough to top it up (pun intended) with a their hybrid mattress topper. Simba offers two different mattress toppers: The Hybrid Essential Mattress Topper and The Hybrid Mattress Topper. Both offer a top up and upgrade to your mattress in a quick and easy way.  Here’s my review of the Simba Hybrid Mattress Topper.

Simba is an award winning, UK based sleep company, with patented mattress designs such as the Simba Hybrid and Simbatex Foam as well as range beds, mattress protectors, duvets, pillows and bedding. Their scientists  developed their designs based on data on 10 million people’s sleeping habits. They design and manufacture everything in the UK which is good for the local economy and saves on shipping emissions. With being B-Corp accredited, Simba meets the high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability required by B-Lab, every aspect of the business from the supply chain, to ethical product innovation.

Sustainability efforts

Environmentally responsible materials: currently, they are already removed many pollutants from the foam they use, they use sustainable produced wood, the textiles are OEKO-TEX certified and they are using mostly recycled materials in the packaging and products too. They are also part of the Better Cotton movement. In the near future they are planning to swap for recycled wood and improved, more environmentally friendly foam.

Tackling emissions: Simba currently invest in reforestation and biodiversity projects that offset the emissions, however, the ultimate goal is to reach Net Zero by 2030 – to be responsible for as close to zero emissions as possible, by investing in projects that absorb emissions rather than just offset them.

Zero waste: the target of wasting nothing is ambitious. Currently, already every part of the mattresses can be recycled, even the foam is being repurposed into dog beds or carpet underlay. All returned mattresses are either recycled or refurbished. But by improving design, they can reach zero waste.

Mattress recycling service: When you buy a Simba mattress, they remove your old mattress; any brand or size as part of their national mattress recycling service. They don’t even benefit from this financially. For a small fee they will collect old mattresses and make sure it’s properly recycled, which means over 80% of components being reused or repurposed. 

The Hybrid Mattress Topper Review

I intended to use this Simba Hybrid Mattress Topper topper on the bed in our guest room, where we have a cheaper mattress as we don’t use it regularly. My thinking was, that this will definitely help to make that bed and mattress more comfortable. It has premium extra support with 2500 Aerocoil springs, Simbatex® foam comfort layers, four fixing straps as well as a removable and washable cover.

So my thinking was right, in fact: this premium Simba Hybrid Mattress Topper really enhances the performance of the cheap mattress. It’s a lot more comfortable and firmer too thanks to the high density Certipur foam base – it’s similar to our proper Simba mattress. This is great, because the cheaper mattress was not firm enough, but moulded slightly when lying on it. 

The other thing that I noticed after trying it for a few nights was that it kept the airflow in check: warm, but not too warm. As you can see it on the photos as well: this topper isn’t just a thin something – it’s got a good depth.

So, all in all I can say, it’s definitely an upgrade we probably would have invested anyway to make the guest bed more comfortable, but without paying for a new mattress. Compared to a decent new mattress’ price, opting for the Hybrid Topper is cheaper as the investment in case of king size bed is £399. It’s cheaper than the refurbished Simba Essential Hybrid as well – and I think it’s great to have different options for different budgets – but still getting the basic Simba comfort (which is in my view is the benchmark now).
