Gifted item.
Ever since I started gardening after we moved into our first house a few years ago, composting was on my radar. We first turned the back of the garden into an area where I set up raised beds. I was glad that the previous owner left both their compost bins there for us to use – so I started to use them. Now, if you ever done this, you know: composting doesn’t happen overnight. Needless to say I’ve tried both compost bins: one I use for cold composting method and the other I use for hot composting method. It takes ages and they are no methods are perfect – but then neither I am: I often forget about them for weeks in winter. Admittedly, I am a rookie gardener, so everything still feels like a big question mark: am I doing the right thing the right way? I’m sure many gardener friends agree with this. And that it’s all a never ending learning curve.
However, I am now very happy to to show you a brand new, smart method, designed for kitchens. The Reencle Smart Kitchen Composter was THE GADGET I immediately said yes to test out. What it does is, it turns your kitchen scrap into compost in the matter of a few days – it is a smart, indoor composter that does hot composting, not just dehydrating that all the other available machines on the market. So in this article I’ll share my review after testing it for a few weeks. Read on!
How long does it takes to produce compost the traditional way?
Producing compost can take varying amounts of time depending on a few things… However, in general, the composting process can range from a few weeks to several months. Provided you maintain the right balance of materials, moisture, and aeration. The quickest way is known as hot composting: about 2-3 months you can see some results. This method typically requires turning the compost pile regularly to keep the microbes active and generate heat. There is also cold composting, which is a more passive method, which can take anywhere from 6 months to a year. This approach is basically just adding organic materials to a pile without much intervention, allowing nature to decompose the materials over time.
About the Reencle Smart Kitchen Composter
This practically hands-free smart composter does what nothing else can, at least I have not come across of a similar gadget: turns your kitchen scrap into compost, does it very quickly and takes up little space. Reading about it all sounded marvellous to me. And it really is.
How does the Reencle Smart Kitchen Composter work?
This smart composter is a size of a small bin and has a motion sensor to open the lid for 3 seconds at the time to put the food scraps in. Works from the mains, so it will need a plug nearby. Reencle takes practically everything: apart from organic scraps that you would normally able to compost, it also takes meat, dairy and bread too, thanks to the germs (thermophilic microbes) coming with the kit. A paddle rotates the food scraps, the germs do their job and the food breaks down in about a day. 1kg of food can bee added to it daily and in about two weeks your first lot of fresh compost is ready.
With 3 main components, the Reencle Smart Kitchen Composter works with:
- Organic Additive – these are the germs or microbes that break the food down via natural fermentation. This produces heat and smell
- Mesh Filter – this is the second layer of the smart kitchen composter
- Carbon Filter – the second step of air filtering and purifying
Both filters are blocking and eliminating unwanted smells.
How much energy does the Reencle Smart Kitchen Composter use?
It’s energy efficient! Which is good news, because electricity is needed for it to work. Remarkably, Reencle runs at only 52 watts per hour, costing around £4-£6 per month (this is based on typical electricity rates).

What did I think about the Reencle Smart Kitchen Composter?
Like I said I was really excited and couldn’t wait to get started.
Setting it up is very easy: out of the box, remove the clearly marked stickers, add the thermophilic microbes (also, these come in a paper bag, so no plastic!), add some water – immediately they come alive and the stuff starts “fizzing”, plug the machine in and switch it on. Wait about a day for the germination. Then, bit by bit, you can start feeding the microbes as per instructions.
I didn’t read them properly, though, so I emptied my kitchen compost bin ENTIRELY into my brand new smart kitchen composter as the first feed of the microbes. But nothing bad or unwanted happened, so it was all good.
I have kept adding everything I would have taken to the compost heap, plus bread ends, bit of a meat, coffee grounds, peels – so that it has a healthy and diverse diet. (I now think about it as a living thing because of the germies.) The smart composter took everything, even cheese and sausages can be composted with Reencle.
These are the best things about the Reencle smart composter:
- it didn’t smell at all, even when opening the lid, the smell is not unpleasant or overwhelming
- it makes no noise whatsoever
- the motion sensor opens the lid and closes it, so no need to touch the machine
- it looks pretty neat sitting in the kitchen. (I lifted it onto the kitchen counter as the cat and the dog kept accidentally opening it walking past.)
- the prospect of not wasting the scraps and having fresh compost in every 2 weeks or so
- it’s for indoor use, so those without a garden can use it too (and use the compost for house plants)
- it’s energy efficient
It’s very straightforward to operate the Reencle Smart Kitchen Composter. It was easy to set it up and use it. The only thing that wasn’t clear to me was that how to repleace the germs once I took the fresh compost – but basically, imagine it as a sourdough starter: I just have to leave some compost at the bottom that contains the microbes so they will keep germinating and making new compost. Voila, it’s brilliant isn’t it?
When it get’s too warm and too much moisture is forming – in which case you can see the water drops running down the walls and dripping from the lid inside – just need to press a button to dry the compost or purify it.
Am I going to keep it – yes absolutely. I would buy it even, I just didn’t know it existed!

How much does the Reencle Smart Kitchen Composter cost?
Now, this is the only problem with this fantastic gadget. It’s expensive, if you only used a food caddy so far and everything went to the compost heap at the back of the garden or into the bin.
However. Looking at the £425 price tag that includes everything and if you compare it to other popular models of dehydrators with grinders sold as composter – it’s not expensive, in fact, with maintenance included over the years, the Reencle Smart Kitchen Composter is cheaper than the the two main competitor, Lomi and Sage. Plus you get two years of warranty.
How to use the compost generated with the Reencle Smart Kitchen Composter?
I have a garden so I can use it there but I also have lots of house plants I can use the compost for, so you don’t need to have a garden to use your healthy and fresh compost. You can also use it to fertilise the lawn, under trees, bushes, your flowers on the balcony, and houseplants; or shared with a neighbour, friend, or organisation who does have a garden. Build that community that cares about the future of the planet!
