Review: DenTek Eco-Friendly Dental Cleaning Products

Dental care used to be a little grey area in eco lifestyle. Bamboo toothbrushes came along with basic heads and cheaply made, weak bristles of plastic, falling out in action. But a couple of great innovations happened too. Since the past few years we can have now sustainably made electric toothbrushes that are a much better choice not only for the environment but also for our teeth. Then, for a couple of years we also have been able to choose from different refillable toothpaste options and toothpaste tablets, which both help to replace the really wasteful plastic toothpaste tubes. See, a single plastic toothbrush and toothpaste tube don’t seem as such a huge amount of waste but they are a bigger problem than we realise. Imagine that nearly 8 billion people clean their teeth with them and they all get discarded every other month. Now, that’s quite a lot! 

There were always just the last step of your oral care kept being forgotten: dental floss and floss picks. I did use eco dental floss for a while but for my teeth, dental floss picks and interdental brushes are much more suitable and this is not something you want to compromise. Luckily, DenTek have come up with eco-friendly floss picks and interdental brushes. They sent me a range of their new products that are made with plant-based material instead of plastic. Read on to find out what I thought about them.

Why is flossing so important?

I’ll be honest with you, I have neglected flossing most of my adult life. I just didn’t like it so I just convinced myself that a good brush and proper brushing is more important. Until I met a dental hygienist who looked at my teeth and said if you don’t use an interdental brush, you will get inflamed and bleeding gums. Flossing play a vital role in removing plaque and debris from areas that a toothbrush can’t reach. So it is actually just as important as brushing, so your teeth get a proper all-round clean.

As for me, the lack of flossing it’s already showing in my 40s – I couldn’t delay action on this so reluctantly started to use them, but always felt bad for all that small pieces of plastics discarded.

The new, plant-based flosses, floss picks and interdental brushes are designed to deliver the deep-clean results you’d expect from the original but thanks to the use of more sustainable materials, these are kinder to the planet. 

They are made using bio-based plastic (produced from a raw material derived from sugar cane plants). Firstly, this is a renewable material and not fossil based plastic. So the new products help to reduce reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% in comparison to conventional plastic. The rest of the design remains the same with the same cleaning power.

What I thought about them

This has to be the easiest review, to be honest. They work perfectly just as they intended and as their plastic counterparts. All you have to do is to find the right size of interdental brush or just use the floss picks. Really simple. They cost the same too, so it’s actually a no brainer for DenTek to swap their entire range for the new, eco-friendly, plant-based material.
