My daughter loves doughnuts, they are one of her favourite treats and normally get some for her as a weekly treat from the bakery on Fridays. I’ve not try to make them as of yet – should give it a go at some point – so for this birthday doughnut cake, I have used supermarket bought doughnuts, as I thought it will be just less risky, rather than attempting to make the doughnuts myself and then ending up with botched birthday cake. So although this article is titled How to Make A No-Bake Doughnut Cake – but really, it’s just a super simple guide, how to assemble and decorate a doughnut cake. I do hope you’ll find it inspirational.
So, after deciding on making a doughnut cake this year, I had to get the decorations. We were planning a Taylor Swift themed party with lot’s of music, dressing up and she invited her girl friends to the party we organised at home. The birthday cake needed some Taylor Swift themed decorations too – so this is what I sourced:
What Do You Need to Buy to Make A No-Bake Doughnut Cake
- A large cake stand or tray, I think it definitely looks better on a cake stand
- 24 doughnuts – I chose iced doughnuts, just plain chocolate icing as that’s what she likes, with chocolate sprinkles and no jam or custard filling. We had 10 little people for the cake, so I calculated 2 each plus some more in case they break. But in the end, they only ate one each, so the grown ups had some too
- Chocolate sauce – this was a Belgian Chocolate Sauce from Marks&Spencer, used almost all the bottle that was 200ml
- Macarons and Oreo like cookies – a packet of cookies and 6-8 macarons in all flavours (also her favourites)
- Wafer butterflies – these were from ASDA, bought two packets of 12 butterflies, none of them were damaged and used them all up for the decoration. Obviously a few less won’t make any difference in the overall look
- Mini marshmallows – Pastel rainbow coloured mini marshmallows from ASDA – I used about 3 large handfuls of them
- Sprinkles – about 40g of light blue and white sprinkles with silver edible pearls
- Taylor Swift themed cupcake toppers and cake topper (paper) – these were from Ebay, along with birthday banner and other party decoration
The aim was, that the colours are coordinated overall: baby blue, pink and lilac so they will pop with the chocolate coloured cake.
How to Assemble the Doughnut Cake?
Step 1
For this birthday doughnut cake, I opted for arranging the donuts in a tree shape and making it by placing the doughnuts in layers on the top of each other.
- With the icing’s help, they will stick on each other
- the extra chocolate sauce, that is not too runny, will also help to hold the cake creation perfectly together
So after placing the doughnuts onto the cake stand and drizzling with the chocolate sauce, it will look like this:
Step 2
Add the cookies and macarons along with the wafer butterflies – or whatever you use. You can use the icing and the chocolate sauce to stick them on, dividing them evenly.
So, something like this:
Step 3
Add all the sprinkles and mini marshmallows, just scatter them over the cake liberally. You can rearrange them if they look too concentrated at places.
Step 4
Add the paper cupcake toppers and cake toppers as a finishing touch. That’s it!
