I have written about many times before how easy and simple it is to avoid using harsh chemicals for cleaning. This time I have teamed up with Magic Wipe to try out their signature product, the XXL Magic Wipe. So this is a part review, part informative post about how can we avoid using too much chemicals when cleaning the bathroom. But first, let’s talk about why we should avoid certain chemicals and how.
Which chemicals can be toxic in cleaning products?
It’s probably old news that most mainstream, branded, supermarket cleaning products are unsustainable.
Studies like this, have shown that a lot of cleaning products such as antibac, multipurpose and glass cleaners etc , may release hundreds of hazardous volatile organic compounds, known as VOCs. These were also found in products that were supposed to be eco-friendly – but fewer, at about 50% less.
These harmful compounds can be sorted into 3 main groups:
- Carcinogens – which cause or promote cancer
- Endocrine disruptors – which mimic human hormones and can cause infertility, asthma and even cancer.
- Neurotoxins – which affect brain activity and cause issues like headaches or memory loss
Are green cleaning products any better?
Yes, and unfortunately no – sometimes. I’ve been cleaning with natural cleaning products for a quite a few years now. It’s because harsh chemicals found in the domestic cleaning products are really quite bad for us.
These days you can see all sorts of confusing labels on cleaning products, like “biodegradable” or “ecological” or simple “sustainable” and “green”. But what do they even mean? Are they all the same? No, they are not, and that’s part of the reason why they are not the perfect solution when we are looking for non-toxic cleaning products. Some are great and perfectly fits the non-toxic bill, but some are pure greenwashing and it’s hard to make a decision when everything is designed so that you buy that product – meaning, there will always be unethical marketing practices, that can trick you.
Navigating the minefield that is mass produced eco-friendly products, first you really need to learn about green cleaning as much as possible. Luckily, there are many good brands, content creators, bloggers and magazines out there doing a good job on this.
What is the alternative to store bought cleaning products?
Make your own cleaning products
Nowadays, I make my own cleaning products, like this citrus infused multipurpose vinegar cleaner. White vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and other natural products are great for cleaning and have very little environmental impact. What’s more, they’re incredibly versatile. White vinegar, for example, can be used as glass cleaner, degreaser, odour remover, and more.
Magic Wipes XXL Bathroom Drying Cloth
I’ve been trying out Magic Wipes and I found them really effective or removing visible grime, stains and watermarks in the bathroom. I used it on glass, metal, tiles and the mirror too and I was surprised to see working very well with and without water added.
How is this possible?
Magic Wipe says:
- no chemicals, just water needed
- deal action weave of 600gsm microfibre does the cleaning job
- wring it out to dry and machine wash (in a washing bag, ideally to make it last longer and to prevent fibres to break off)
Magic Wipe’s ultra fine fibres create a MECHANICAL action, that physically lifts the bacteria. It doesn’t kill the bacteria like an antibac spray that also kills everything else around it, but picks it up and destroys it mechanically. Then, you wash the Magic Wipe and the job is done.
About Magic Wipes
As I mentioned before, Magic Wipes is a trademarked cleaning wipe that cleans with the help of powerful fibres and water. It saves thousands of sheets of paper towels and tons of chemicals going down the drain and polluting the waterways. Naturally, it’s also better for your health. Because it’s so well made and constructed to last long, it will also survive for at least 200 washing cycles .
Here’s a before and after photo:
What I thought about the Magic Wipe XXL?
I thought it’s very convincing after trying it out in the bathroom. I tried to wipe down wet surfaces like shower door – to dry it and also to get rid of the watermarks which I would normally use a squeegee for but that’s not properly drying the glass. The Magic Wipe however does that and it absorbs the moisture quickly too, so it only takes 30 seconds to wipe down the panels after using the shower.
It removed the dirt and grease around the taps and off the tiles as well very easily. Again, as you can see on the photo, the texture of the Magic Wipe does the work, those white bits are what’s been picked up off the tiles being wiped down:
