I like Valentine’s Day, it cheers up mid February a little bit. I think we all need that towards the end of the winter. When I say I like Valentine’s Day – it’s not like Christmas or Birthdays though, so we don’t really buy gifts. The children are just getting into making hand made gifts which is very cute and something I will cherish – but as grown ups we don’t buy things for each other. Well, probably a box of chocolate to share. We don’t even go out, we do that often, but not because it’s Valentine’s Day. What we do, however is, that we make a nice meal, grab a bottle of wine, bake some heart shaped cookies and decorate with DIY decorations. I tend to decorate our bedroom too, because it’s really looks nice, a bit different and with a few DIY decorations I can avoid buying cheap plastic tat. Store-bought cheap plastic things aren’t very romantic either. So to avoid them, I prepared a short, easy to make DIY Valentine’s Day Bedroom Decorations – hope you’ll find something useful even as last minute decor. Enjoy!
Use Flowers
Naturally, the simplest, easiest and most romantic way is to add beautiful rooms to the bedroom. It doesn’t need to be red roses if you don’t liek them, any flower you like. You can decorate the bed with petals, place small vases scattered around or a big bouquet. You can go a step further and create this beautiful upcycled jar with some scrap jute, jute strings and lace – or similar mix of natural and pretty textiles:
Or of course, just scatter the petals and you can make it a little extra by looking up origami towel folding techniques, so you can create a pair of love birds or similar. It is a bit cheesy – but the fact that YOU made it makes it really sweet in my view:
A no faff option that also isn’t red – it’s just your favourite flowers.
Paper Decoration
You don’t have to be a pro at paper origami to make simple, heart shaped paper decoration for the bedroom. It’s so effective and pretty when hanging them up using jute strings. Alternatively, make simple fans of red and pink paper and cut them into heart shape on the top.
DIY Reed Diffuser
What about a lovely romantic scent that floats around in the bedroom? Such a lovely touch – and it’s so easy to make yourself! I recently made some reed diffuser refills myself, it’s very simple and straight-forward, I promise! It’s also cheaper than buying – and it’s all natural.
Here’s the recipe:
- carrier oil (I choose jojoba but you can also choose sweet almond, apricot kernel or any similar oil.
- essential oils of your choice
- alcohol (optional, it makes the scent travel faster and the wood sticks absorb the diffuser mixture easier)
- small bottles with narrow neck
- wooden (reed) sticks
DIY Candle
Another beautiful DIY decoration that is nicer and healthier than store-bought. Perfect as part of your DIY Valentine’s Day bedroom decorations – it really sets a romantic mood. Making candle at home is not a big deal, you will need a few special ingredients of course, so here they are:
- 450g Natural Wax Pellets (Soy, Coconut, etc)
- Essential oil of your choice
- Cotton wicks
Instructions:
- Create a double boiler to melt your candle wax, like when you melt chocolate. Melt the wax.
- add fragrance once the wax reaches 85°C, gently stir it. (This is when it’s melted, in case you don’t have a thermometer)
- Prepare a jar (toughened glass or tin – you can even recycle empty ones) place a cotton wick in the middle of each of your candle containers.
- Allow the wax to cool for a few minutes (but don’t let it start solidify) then pour it into your prepared candle containers, Filling each container to about ¼ of an inch (6 mm) from the top. Use a wick bar, clothespin, or sticks to hold the wicks in the middle of the jar and allow the candles to cool. Trim the candle shorter if it’s needed.
DIY Valentine’s Wreath
If you’re feeling extra crafty – you could make a Valente’s Wreath too: you will probably need a heart shaped wicker wreath base from a craft shop – and you then just add the flowers by pulling the stems through the gaps of the wreath or use jute strings to tie them. Apart from real flowers you can also use paper or dried flowers, paper heart shaped cut outs, red and pink ribbons or scrap textile cut into strips.
