Quality sleep and underwear are always an investment. You want comfort and value for your money, that should last more than just a few months and it feels luxurious to wear them. Even if we just talk about every day items like boxer shorts, knickers and pyjamas. Turns out, that the small things in life, like quality sleep- and underwear can really give that oomph to the everyday. In this article, I will share my review of British Boxer’s bamboo and organic cotton garments, that’s been sent for me to feature on the blog.
About British Boxers
British Boxers designs and produces classic garments with traditional shapes but mixing and upping the styles with luxury materials, superb quality and bold colours and print. In their garment range, you’ll find natural fibres such as crisp and brushed cotton, organic cotton and bamboo too. The two latter are the ones I picked for the review, because I love bamboo for its softness and sustainability and the same applies for organic cotton, which is superior to regular cotton in the soft feel of the material and eco-friendliness.
Ethical credentials
British Boxers design all their products in Staffordshire, England and almost all the products are manufactured with minimal waste in both Great Britain and Europe. The factory workers are highly skilled and paid a decent wage.
What I chose to review
Bamboo underwear packs
The brand has a wonderful selection of underwear and loungewear – for every taste and shape. You can choose a classic cut with bright and funky colours, like I did. I picked a multipack of colourful bamboo high-leg knickers in fresh pastels for myself. Or you can chose a modern shape like hipster boxer briefs, they must be equally comfortable because of the gorgeous bamboo material.
For my husband I chose boxer shorts in a multipack, all black – that’s what he prefers. He’s also been a converted bamboo material enthusiasts since I introduced him to bamboo boxer shorts and socks years ago.
What I thought about them?
Both the boxers and the knickers are extremely soft. I am not even exaggerating, bamboo is the softest and comfiest material when it comes to underwear. Nothing comes close to it. Bamboo is also environmentally friendly, because it’s produced without chemicals and fertilisers and it naturally grows very fast. It makes a wonderful natural fibre. When making clothing with it – especially underwear, the bamboo fibre is combined with elastane in a small percent, to make it a more stretchy. The colours of the knickers are brighter than pastels, I would say – but I love that even more. I just prefer colourful underwear over black and white. Or at least to have both options in my wardrobe.
Organic cotton tops and cotton pyjama bottoms
Next up, we have some organic cotton tops and pyjama bottoms. I picked a loose fit, organic cotton scoop neck top in navy going with a pair of brushed cotton pyjama trousers in Dumbarton tartan. The colours are deep and bright. Both materials are very soft and comfortable. The trousers’ length is perfect for me (174cm, me). The t-shirts are designed so that you can wear either as lounge- or sleep wear or as part of a casual day outfit.
I also chose a beautiful, classic pair of pyjama bottoms for my husband – this is a true gift item, very sophisticated. When in doubt, what to get for your husband for Christmas – this is it! So very beautifully made, every single stitch is at the right place, with strong colours on that lovely pattern. It’s called Geometric Sea. They call this type of cotton “crisp cotton” and it’s indeed crisp in the sense of fresh and cool feeling to touch but also soft and gentle. It feels and looks like it’s from a really high-end gentlemen’s outfitters boutique on Jermyn Street. (Which is how British Boxers started. They started as a supplier company to exclusive Jermyn Street outfitters. This alone speaks volumes of the quality of their products.)
Last but not least, I also received a wonderful, bright pink organic cotton sweatshirt – again, either loungewear or casual daywear item. (I fully intend to wear this with jeans when the chillier weather arrives.) It’s GOTS-certified 85% organic ring-spun combed cotton 15% Recycled Polyester cotton. It’s very comfy and roomy too, so you can layer up when it’s cold.
To sum up the review
It’s always a pleasure to find and have the chance to review brands like British Boxers. It’s refreshing to see, there are clothing brands doing the right things quietly, without green washing or making false announcements about how ethical and green they are.
The thing is, that if every clothing brand did the same as British Boxers, that’s what we should aspire on the grans scheme of things. Designed in the UK, manufactured in the UK and EU, with ethical standards and introducing sustainable materials to their traditional collection, whilst upholding a quality standard that should really be the norm. In my eyes, British Boxers truly represent the best of British garment making.
A few extra points I want to add to the above:
- Every item was true to size.
- Extra brownie point for plastic free packaging of the bamboo products. (The rest though arrived in plastic – for full transparency, I want to mention that. Hopefully that will change soon – I did ask the brand and they said they are phasing out conventional plastic but they need to be mindful about waterproofing the outer packaging.)
- I absolutely LOVE that there are a WHOLE range of sizes. Not just just the fact that the sizes go to XXL but also petit/XXS – and that’s real body positivity. It’s great to see brands going beyond 8-14 in sizes.
