Review: FabRap Reusable Gift Wraps

The Christmas season is upon us and of course all that waste it also brings along, not just cheer and joy. One of the most wasteful part of Christmas gifting is the wrapping paper. Many people thinks, that it’s just in the name: it’s PAPER, however, it’s not true. But it’s not just about recycling our way out of this issue. It’s also about saving tens of thousands of trees, CO2 emissions and water.

Overt the years, I have written articles about recycling Christmas packaging and alternative ways if grift wrapping – not just for Christmas. My go to, and favourite ways are the options that are reusable. No need to worry about recycling and by saving energy on the overall, commercial recycling process the reusable gift wrapping options are the clear winner. There is nothing more sustainable, than keeping the item in circulation and keep reusing it until eat reaches its end of life. Then, we can think about recycling or upcycling it.

What I thought about Fabraps

They are very very beautiful. Vibrant, deep colours and lovely patterns: some classic, some modern, some of them are seasonal. They all look luxurious and elegant. Mine have golden details and they are just exquisite.

Three different sizes means you can choose them for a lot of different items to wrap in them. The double sided gift wraps are genius, why waste the other side, indeed? And they are both very pretty.

Everything packaged plastic free too, all the wraps are packaged in a paper envelope.

Prices start at £12.- for a single sided wrap. They are on the price side, the double sided wraps are available from £17.30.- but I think the price worth it because you can keep reusing them for a long time.

Can Christmas wrapping go in the recycling bin?

Yes, but also know. It depends on the wrapping paper’s closeness to actual paper. Brown paper wrapping can go in the recycling bin, no problem. However, those printed with plastic of oil based inks – even if it’s printed on brown paper – sadly, cannot. Furthermore, anything shiny and glossy and printed with non-water based inks (most commercial Christmas wrapping paper) are cannot be recycled. Not to mention the glittery stuff. Definitely unsuitable for recycling. 

Adding to the problems, you would have to remove sticky tapes as well as they are not made of paper. All in all. it’s a lot of malarkey to properly recycle Christmas wrapping paper, isn’t it?

How much wrapping paper is used at Christmas?

Quite a lot. The latest, 2025 update on UK Christmas statistics is showing that typical household generates more than 3 large black bin bags’ worth of packaging waste at Christmas, making the total of what the UK uses to  227,000 miles of wrapping paper each year, which is enough to cover the Shard 4,567 times. Not trying to be funny, are you, guys? Because this is quite the opposite, it’s really sad that despite of years and years of campaigning – we are still doing this badly.

What is Furoshiki?

Traditionally, Furoshiki is used to wrap and transport goods in Japan, using the expression for both fashioning a carrier bag from a cloth and lately, in the modern world also to wrap things in a presentable way.

There are many methods to do this, however don’t think about it as you will have to follow origami instructions step-by-step, it’s not at all complicated. You can work out many on your own, just trying to use the wrap and the item to wrap in the most logical and aesthetic way together. You can try different ways that you find pretty and work for you.
