Decorating the ceiling for the Christmas table? Yes!

Last year, I  had a brainwave and decided to decorate above our nice, large dining table for Christmas. The previous year I have upcycled the table: we found it in the shed left there by its previous owners. It’s a lovely, old shabby chic table and I sanded it down, varnished it and painted the legs to chalk orange to make a better fit four the predominantly mid-century modern colour scheme we have. 2024 being the first proper Christmas in our house, I thought I add a little extra touch for the season and make a festive ceiling decoration. I made it as sustainable as I can: I gathered evergreen branches from the garden, used only decoration we had or made years ago and whilst I bought new things I admit, they were just a couple of paper hanging decorations, which I saved for this year as well. Along with some I found in charity shops. 

This year I’m changing it up a bit – adding the beautiful paper starlights I have received. I also realised I never posted a tutorial to the blog – so I’m fixing that now. Hopefully, you’ll find some decor inspiration in this blog post.

About Paper Starlights

Step 1

First of all, you’ll need a drill and a couple of cup hooks (shouldered cup hooks 25mm) which needs to be attached to the ceiling. See photo below. This is pretty straight forward if you have a drill, just space them out as you wish. I have 4 stretched out on 2 metres. For me, it’s also a permanent feature as I like decorating it for seasons and birthday parties. Note: they are not super strong, so don’t hang heavy items on then. You’ll also need a couple of Christmas wire tree hooks to hang the decorations.

Step 2

Gather evergreen branches from the garden. I used holly and ivy, but whatever you can get your hands on will work. Evergreens with thick leaves also last long, so you can keep them up for weeks without having to change them. If you set up your festive ceiling decor  3-4 weeks before Christmas, the same time as your Christmas tree goes up – they will last after Christmas.

Insert the longest branches through the hooks and the shorter ones can just sit on the top of the long ones, arranging them across or any which way you like.

Step 3

Add lightweight decoration such as papier-maché, wood, salt-dough and of course Paper Starlights. You can add anything else that matches to complete your decor idea, a couple of your usual baubles to match with the Christmas tree and even fairy lights.

Tips

Add decorations at different length for a more 3D look from below.
