Low temperatures and poor weather conditions can increase your chances of breakdowns during the winter months. Not only that, but the poor road conditions pose danger, so to prevent accidents make sure that your car is in it’s best condition. So before the worst winter weather takes hold, make sure you complete your winter service checklist to ensure you and your loved ones are safe when on the road. Here’s how and why.
Servicing and MOT
The beginning of the winter season is always a good time to go through some once-a-year or twice-a-year auto maintenance tasks too. Postponing regular and basic car maintenance can be dangerous and expensive for you. Neglecting oil changes can increase the buildup and friction in your engine, more likely to suffer a breakdown, lead to component failures and lead to expensive repairs on the long run. Tyres fittings, repair and maintenance
Winter safety checks for the tyres are extremely important as tyres are your first contact between you and the road when driving. The icy, wet, slippery roads pose great danger if your tyres are too worn out. Steering, acceleration and braking are more difficult given the winter road conditions. In winter, tread depth should be checked to ensure it is well above the legal minimum of 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the tyre, around its entire circumference.Tyre pressures should be checked at least once a month. After 5 years, a tyre specialist should check your tyre every year and 10 years, tyres should be replaced – this is the golden rule. Keeping your tyres in good condition will also save you money, as they’ll ensure your car consumes fuel efficiently.
Regular servicing saves money
Unexpected repairs and breakdowns can cost a lot of money. A thorough inspection by a professional will ensure all the correct assessments are carried out at a superior standard. Not only will this extend the life of your vehicle, it will also prevent you from being in danger on the road, exposing danger to others or having to fork out a hefty cost in repairs further into the future.
