Heat pumps have become increasingly popular in recent years. The combination of improved technology, government grants and more widespread awareness means that more and more business and home owners have adopted them, but how does it all actually work?
In this article, we decided to focus on one, important part of the process of setting up a ground source heat pump: drilling the hole. From planning the project to linking up the heat pump, here’s how it all works.
What is a heat pump?
A heat pump is an energy-efficient system used for heating and cooling spaces. It works by transferring heat from one place to another, making it versatile for year-round comfort. In winter, a heat pump extracts warmth from the outside air or ground and transfers it indoors. Conversely, in summer, it reverses this process and cools the interior by releasing heat outside. Heat pumps can significantly reduce energy consumption compared to traditional heating systems, offering both environmental and economic benefits.

Planning the heat pump project
Before drilling can start, you’ll need to clarify the scope and goals of the project. For example, you’ll need to determine your heating needs, typical annual temperatures, restrictions on digging, and the type of ground that you’ll be digging in.

Drilling the hole
For the actual hole to be drilled, the drilling rig will need to be brought to the site and set up. Depending on how simple the access is, this can either be very simple or quite complex.
Next, the rig will be used to drill a borehole between roughly 50-150 metres in depth, again depending on the heating requirements of the property in question.
In some cases, it might be necessary to drill multiple holes, if a single borehole won’t be able to draw sufficient heat for the building’s requirements. The drilling team will be able to make an assessment as to whether drilling multiple holes will be a more efficient strategy than drilling a single, deeper hole.
Installing the pipes
Once the hole has been drilled, a closed look pipe will be placed into it, so that liquid can be pumped through the pipe and absorb some of the ambient temperature of the ground surrounding it.
A thermal grout will be placed around the pipe once it’s been installed, ensuring that there is maximally efficient energy transfer between the pipe and the surrounding environment. If there are any air gaps, this can reduce the efficiency of the setup.
Linking to a heat pump
Finally, the pipe network can be linked up to the heat pump that’s located above ground. The heat pump will be able to pump a fluid mixture through the closed-loop pipe (or pipes, depending on heating needs) and then, using a complicated heat transfer process, essentially ‘amplify’ that ambient heat until it’s enough to heat water for the building in question.
Heat pumps can be a cheap, sustainable way of heating water for properties of all sizes. While the grants that are eligible from the government are currently undergoing a number of changes, it’s worth looking into what you could be eligible for, to see if it helps sway your decision.
