My 5-year-old just learning to read. It’s one of the things he really likes and always loved stories. Reading is at the core of every child’s education. It is one of the first things that they are taught at school and used for almost every subject and activity throughout their years in education. The benefits are endless. A fantastic form of entertainment, an activity to help you relax and also the perfect way to educate yourself. Whether you read to learn or for pleasure Mill Hill, a co-curricular day & boarding school in London have pulled together some interesting reasons why reading is so important for students…
Extends their vocabulary:
Reading books, newspapers, blogs and other written materials has been proven to help increase a student’s vocabulary. If you spot words along the way that you do not understand, write them down and then learn their meanings. This will not only help you to enhance your vocabulary, but will also help you to write impressive essays or stories.
Improves general knowledge:
Reading is one of the best ways to acquire knowledge. Reading a wide range of books will help expand your general knowledge and fill your mind with new facts and information. This will help you to come up with new ideas and always have something interesting to talk about
Enhances students writing skills:
Writing is an art and you study it by reading. Regular reading will give you a better understanding of good sentence structure and the rhythm of words. You’ll have a clearer idea of how to write well, and how to get your point across to your reader. Once you have found a great story, try to find other books by the same writer. You can then try to emulate their style and structure into your own writing.
It’s known to reduce stress:
No matter how much stress you have whilst studying, or encounter in your in daily life, it can all just slip away when you are able to lose yourself in a great story. A gripping novel can transport you to another world, letting tensions drain away and allowing you to relax. Give it a try next time you are feeling under stress and need to take a break.
