If you have spent your entire life living in one city, there are a whole range of reasons why it might well be time for a change. In this article, I will be running through a list of just a few of the most common ones and some of the advantages that people experience when they decide to take the plunge. If you’re moving with your family, you need to find out how children friendly that the city is.
You Get to Know Yourself Better
Even if you move somewhere new with your family, you still get to know yourself a bit better by living elsewhere. After all, a lot of your support structures are removed (your friends, your local shops etc). So, you are forced into a situation in which you have to start over, which many people find to be liberating. You get to see things from an outsider’s point of view and this gives you an entirely new perspective on your hometown as well.
You Become More Adaptable
Even if you just move to another city that is fairly nearby, you are likely to find that people’s attitudes and common behaviour are that little bit different. So, you learn to become more adaptable and to keep an open mind about the way things are done. Instead of being scared of change, you start to feel ready and able to embrace it. This change in perspective can really be a huge turning point in life for a lot of people.
You Learn to Build New Connections
When you become settled in a single place you tend not to encounter new people so often. Moving to another city puts you in a situation when you have to start from scratch. This art of building new connections is invaluable to learn, and it is something that you can carry with you throughout your life. It may even help you out in your professional life as you hone up your networking skills.
You Can Build Up a New Identity
You don’t have to reinvent yourself entirely, but living in another city gives you a unique opportunity to build a new sense of identity. After all, you have more of a blank slate to work from as people don’t know about your backstory and they don’t have any pre-existing prejudices towards you. Again, this is another part of moving to a new town which people find to be extremely liberating.
It is Easier Than Ever
Thanks to ever-improving transportation links and communication networks, moving doesn’t seem quite as challenging as it once did. Logistical challenges are taken care of with companies like Shiply, and you can speak to your friends back home easily thanks to services like Skype. And if you find that you are not happy in your new environment, you are likely to have more freedom to move back again.
So, these are just a few of the reasons why you should try living in a new city at some point down the line.
